This issue's cover
Cover shows the Ayurvedic wellness resort and hotel, the Oberoi
Udaivilas, Udaipur, on the banks of Lake Pichola in Rajasthan, India.
There is a more on this resort and its pools on page 72.
The backbone of
We all know that without swimming pool builders, there would be no
swimming pool industry. But there is another equally important arm
to the industry, and while I wouldn't say anyone ever forgets about
it, it might be true to say that its importance isn't always taken fully
Dedicated swimming pool and spa retailers do more than just supply
chemicals, equipment and accessories. They keep the industry
For a start, as Peter Wallace says in the article on Smarter Retailing
on page 38, if it wasn't for them, many consumers would just find
swimming pools too hard and stop using them. And worse, tell their
friends. On top of that, Wallace estimates that 80 per cent of after-
market sales for swimming pool equipment comes from profession-
al pool shops. That makes them critically important.
As the retail environment in general isn't terribly buoyant at pres-
ent, we decided to look into some ideas that can make life more
productive and profitable for pool shop owners, and we received
some very interesting feedback from Wallace and John O'Brien
While talking of those two very experienced members of the indus-
try, it's worth noting that both their companies are breaking ground
-- AstralPool literally by starting work on the biggest swimming pool
equipment factory in Australia, and Poolwerx by further expanding
their franchise model into the United States. There is more on both
inside this issue, on pages 35 and 42 respectively.
On the commercial side, Veda Dante looks at the revolution in
wellness therapies and notes how it can improve the profitability and
visitation in aquatic centres if adopted with the aim of providing a
healthy, pure product to the consumer.
Another article of note in this edition is the research study that
shows pregnant women can benefit from aquatic exercise -- and so
can their babies. Have a look at the findings on page 32.
While the researchers recommend further studies to confirm the
results, it is yet another validation of swimming pools as promoters
of a healthy lifestyle.
