running, first check there
is power to it and that it's

In June, a 13 year old boy was trapped in a spa
outlet at e Colonnades apartment block in Mil-
sons Point, Sydney. e Mosman Daily newspaper
published his name as Jamie (surname withheld)
and also posted images of the spa in question.
e images include one of a skimmer without a
cover appearing to have no venting. It was in this
outlet that the boy reportedly became trapped.
According to AS1926.3-2010, at least two func-
tioning suction outlets per pump must be installed
a minimum of 600mm apart. ey cannot be on
seating or backrests areas and must have approved
e boy su ered extensive bruising and potential
nerve damage from the incident, but was lucky that
his head was not under the water and that there was
a cut-o switch installed.
Jamie was in the pool with his younger brother
Julian when according to the article he was "vac-
uumed into the corner of the pool". He screamed
as his mother Joyce and two sta tried to pull his
shoulder out of the inlet. Julian was also wedged in
the middle between Jamie and the outlet.
e cleaner turned o the pump but they still
couldn't get him out because of the strong vacuum
e ect. It took about three minutes to release him
and he was taken to hospital afterwards to assess

a similar incident occurred involving a girl at the
same location. is has not been con rmed.
e Colonnades management reportedly said
they were "looking into covering the openings with
grills" and put up warning signs.
Following the story appearing online, SPASA
NSW contacted SPLASH! to say they have since
spoken and written to the Colonnades body corpo-
rate about this issue at length. A SPASA member
consultant was engaged and has already been out
to inspect and a report is being provided regarding
issues and re-mediation work required.
In the interim, the spa has been shut down.
