A hot but
Before it arrived, this season was heralded as a burning hot cinder
of a summer, crammed with sweaty kids begging for a brand spank-
ing new swimming pool.
Well, it was certainly hot. In fact 2015 was the fifth hottest year on
record. But the summer was also cold and wet in parts without
extended periods of purely hot hot weather. In all, it was a funny sea-
son. The East Coast even experienced a “monsoon” that somehow
managed to slip down from the equator.
While the February figures aren’t in yet, the trend data indicates it
was a good summer – just not as good as many were hoping.
One thing that becomes very noticeable in summer is the negative
side of too much sun. In Australia we love to get out on a warm day
and enjoy the outdoors, ideally in and around our own private swim-
ming pool. Unfortunately our country has one of the highest rates of
skin cancer in the world, so we need to be especially careful while
we enjoy ourselves.
This issue we look at the latest developments in sun protection,
particularly as it relates to lounging around the swimming pool.
Another hot southern hemisphere country is Brazil. The Brazilian
home and pool featured on the cover is designed by renowned Mex-
ican architect Javier Senosiain whose organic designs are about to
grace Hobart, in the shape of the new resort/casino.
Speaking of casinos, the SPLASH! Pool & Spa Trade Show is moving
out of Jupiters which had been its home for the past decade, to
a larger venue with more open space across the road at the Gold
Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre. It looks like it will be the
biggest ever pool and spa trade show in Australia, and the biggest
ever in the region if you look at shows that are dedicated solely to the
pool and spa trade.
Everyone is very excited. The show is just about sold out and there
is a great line-up of seminars and related events, including the
national SPASA Australia awards and the co-located International
We’ll keep you updated as we get closer to the event, which will be
held on August 17 and 18.
